Usually, Schlage’s Smart locks come with default programming codes which are usually 6-digit numbers. A new smart lock comes with a default programming code. However, the default programming code usually works with two default users already assigned to the default code. Mind you, the default user code allows you to test the effectiveness of the new smart lock.

How To Find Schlage Programming Code
You will find the Schlage programming code in two different locations:
- On the front of the User Manual;
- At the back of the keypad assembly.

Mind you, people often find it difficult to locate the code, especially at the back of the keypad assembly. This is a result of the complexity involved in removing the lock from the door to locate the code.
How Do You Remove the Lock From the Door?
You can easily remove the lock from the door by following the steps below.
- Get a suitable screwdriver. A perfect example is the Philips Screwdriver which is suitable for installing and uninstalling a bolt.
- Then, remove the battery cover to disengage the battery from the lock.
- Afterwards, unscrew the bolt above the thumb knob.
- Thereafter. unscrew the bolt within the battery cabinet.
- Lastly, disconnect the cable to remove the back connector from the front connector.
You will most likely find the programming code at the back of the connector, alongside the default user code.
How To Change the Default Programming Code

As a new user, you will have to change the default programming code to your preferred and safe ones. This is because changing the default code will give you unique and secure access to your lock. In other words, failure to change the default programming code may make your home susceptible to insecure access.

The following steps will guide you in changing your default programming code.
- Press the Schlage button.
- Enter the default programming code on the keypad. The Schlage button will illuminate three orange light while the lock beeps three times.
- Press key number 3 and wait a few seconds.
- Enter your new 6-digit programming code and wait a few seconds.
- Enter the code again and observe a green light on the Schlage button followed by a long beep. This indicates a successful change of programming code.
What Is Next?
After you have changed the default programming code, you will have to register a new user for the code. The smart lock supports user code between 4 and 8 digits. However, the first 4-6 digits must be different from the first 4-6 digits of your programming code.
Follow the following steps to add new users to your new code.
- Press the Schlage button.
- Enter your 6-digit programming code.
- Press 1 on the keypad to add a new user.
- Enter the new user code you would like to add.
- Enter the code again and observe a green light on the Schlage button followed by a long beep. This indicates a successful change of programming code.
